Roulette Terms Explained

When it comes to the classic casino game roulette, there are several terms that are part of the game that don’t have apparent meanings when it comes to understanding the game. Roulettepro.com is here to explain things for you so that you can be a better player.

American Roulette / European Roulette

These are the two main variants of Roulette tables and wheels that are used, and it is crucial to understand the differences between the two so that you know how to make the most of the game. In particular, you need to know what difference it makes in the odds and chances of winning.

Biased Numbers

This is an important term to know. It refers to some of the numbers that are statistically shown to appear more often than any other number when based on a long term analysis. Though every number has a mathematically equal chance of being spun, there are several players who believe that some numbers appear more often than others and claim to win big by only betting on those numbers.

Carre / Corner Bet

This is a bet where your chips are placed on the joining point of four corners of four different numbers. This will give you a bet where if any of the four numbers come up then you will win.

Colonne / Column Bet

This is a bet placed on one of the three columns of twelve numbers. If any of your twelve numbers are spun, then you win the bet, and so it is basically a one in three chance of winning.

Double Up System of Betting

This refers to a betting strategy such as the Martindale Strategy where losing bets are doubled so that when/if they win then the extra winnings off-set the previous loses. This strategy works well provided the player can afford to keep doubling and doesn’t hit the table limit.

En Prison

This is a French betting term, that means ‘in prison’ it is used to describe a situation on even money bets only when a zero is spun. Some casinos will let you either take back half your stake or hold half your stake ‘in prison’ on the bet. If a second zero is spun in a row, then you lose all of your imprisoned bets.

Five Number Bet

This is one of the worst bets that you can place on an American Roulette table only. You are basically betting that the wheel will spin a 0, 00, 1, 2 or 3. So it is tough to win. It also gives the house a much higher edge.

Orphans

This is a term that is exclusively applied to a European roulette wheel, and it refers to a bet on three specific numbers. These numbers are 6,34 and 17. These three numbers all sit together on the roulette wheel in adjacent pockets.

Parlay

This is a term that refers to the act of doubling your stake. It is commonly used in a doubling up strategy.
